Scuzz Case Study

In 2003 Sky launched three new music channels (Scuzz, The Amp & Flaunt) with distinctive brands and aspirations. I worked closely with the brand team and business owners to lead the design and front-end development of the Scuzz website.

Aimed at rebellious 14-25 year old males, Scuzz was Sky’s heavy rock channel. Therefore I decided to play with the rules of usability and create a fun site for ‘those-in-the-know’ and be exclusive of the masses. The intent was to create a site that could be distorted and disfigured but would retain its unique style. In addition the navigation was deliberately hidden and had to be sought out by users, deemed to be a largely tech-savvy group.

The site became the most popular of the three channels with a small but devoted underground user base until it was de-commissioned a year later following Sky’s sale of the channels.

In addition to creating the site in conjunction with the brand guidelines I also created the front-end HTML, including some fun hidden Easter-eggs for the users, and liased with the third-party development company to deliver the final site.
